How To Dry And Cure Your Marijuana Buds

Posted by True Blue Terpenes on

A couple of months ago we discussed how to start a small-scale DIY cannabis garden. We promised we would give more information on what to do after harvesting and True Blue is here to deliver. Last time we talked about growing, and today we’d like to talk about the next steps: drying and curing your buds.

Why Cure Your Harvested Buds?

According to Leafly, properly curing buds result in a more potent product. While growing, cannabis plants produce the cannabinoid THCA, which later becomes the main psychoactive element in weed (THC) through a process called biosynthesis. This biosynthesis keeps happening even after you harvest your plants, meaning that proper curing conditions will result in a higher-level THC product with a more authentic taste and aroma.

How To Cure And Dry Cannabis

To dry cannabis, cut the stocks off of the plant and hang them upside down from a string or wire - like a clothesline - in a cool, dark place. This should be in a room that is consistently averaging about 65-degrees, and have a humidity of about 45-55 percent. This can be accomplished with items such as a dehumidifier or small AC unit.

You will know the stocks are dry enough when the flower feels crunchy and the branch snaps when you bend it - this can take up to two weeks.

Now it is time to finish curing the buds. Separate the buds from the branches and place them in an airtight container like a canning jar, making sure to pack them loosely and not force more buds into a jar than comfortably fit. Place the lid tightly onto the container and store the buds in a cool, dark, and dry space. After a day or two, your flowers should no longer be crunchy. If they are, you may have over-dried them in the first step. For the next week, open the jars a few times each day to let some fresh air in. If you notice a chemical-like smell, your buds may be growing mold and are no longer usable. After the first week, open the jars only 1-2 times per week for up to 8 weeks before enjoying your cannabis.
